Xi’an, China - May 2017
Our family were lucky enough to live in China for 3 years. Any visit to this crazy, fascinating country is not complete without visiting Xi’an, capital of the Shaanxi province and home to the terracotta warriors. Thousands of these human sized terracotta figures were made to protect the Chinese Emperor Qin Shi Huang in his afterlife. This army of warriors were discovered in 1974 and each has its own individual facial features and expressions. Definitely worth a visit to learn all about how these figures were made over 2000 years ago. I can highly recommend the See Tang Youth hostel. Situated near the city wall in the middle of the quaint art district. Step out the hostel and immerse yourself in Chinese contemporary art. It was beautiful seeing old chinese folk, sat painting or playing mahjong to the sound of the tiny birds tweeting in their birdcages hanging from the trees overhead. We also thoroughly enjoyed the abundance of flavours, spices, crafts, jewellery and textiles that can be found in the Human Street market situated in the Muslim Quarter but be warned it’s a very busy street market… Keep hold of your children’s hands. It’s not unsafe, just an abundance of people.
Zestip: Try the street food in the Muslim Quarter, lamb is the speciality and the traditional bread from this region ‘yangrou paomo’ is delicious. Bear in mind if you’re a vegetarian this area may not be for you and of course don’t expect to get alcohol in the muslim quarter however it’s easy enough to purchase outside the area.
